Dental Emergencies: What to Do When your Child’s Front Permanent Tooth Falls Out or Gets Fractured

There’s nothing quite like the panic that sets in when your child comes running to you with a bleeding mouth and a tooth in their hand. Or if the school calls to say that your child has had a fall with bleeding from the mouth. We’ve seen countless parents arrive at our practice in a state of shock, unsure whether they’ve done the right thing in those crucial first moments. The truth is, dental emergencies happen more often than you might think, especially with active children who love sports and play.

Those Critical First Moments

When a permanent front tooth gets knocked out completely, you’re essentially racing against the clock. The first thing you need to do is find that tooth. Check the ground, their mouth, even their clothing. Once you’ve got it, hold it by the white part (the crown) and avoid touching the root at all costs. That root surface has living cells that are vital for reattachment.

Here’s what many parents don’t realise: tap water can actually harm those cells. Instead, store the tooth in milk, saline or even the patient’s saliva. If the child is older and is able, you can store the tooth in the mouth next to the cheek. Alternatively, if you feel you are confident enough, and the whole intact tooth is clean, hold it by the white crown part and gently rinse in milk or saline solution. Now, this next part might sound daunting, but if you can manage it, try popping the tooth back into the socket carefully. Your child can bite down gently on a clean cloth to hold it in place whilst you rush to get help. Can’t face putting it back in or if it’s painful? That’s completely understandable. Leave it to us to help. Give us a call straight away on 02089592497 or call NHS 111 out of hours. The sooner they get seen, the better the prognosis.

For fractured teeth, start by rinsing your child’s mouth with warm or lukewarm water. A cold compress against their cheek or lip (whatever is affected) will help with any swelling. If you can find any broken pieces of tooth, bring them along—they might prove useful during treatment.

Why Every Dental Trauma Is Different

Not every tooth accident requires the same response, which can make things confusing for parents. A completely knocked-out tooth needs immediate reimplantation attempts, whereas a small chip might only need some cosmetic work from a Composite Bonding Specialist in London. When the fracture is more severe, and you can see pink tissue or your child is experiencing significant pain, that’s the nerve being exposed requiring further treatment. It is prudent to get in touch urgently.

Baby teeth present their own puzzle. If a milk tooth falls out, we don’t usually put it back in because it could damage the permanent tooth developing underneath. However, you should still bring your child in for an assessment. There might be damage we need to monitor.

What Happens When You Come to See Us

When you arrive at our Best Dental Clinic in Mill Hill, we’ll start with a comprehensive examination and assess the situation expertly. X-rays help us see what’s happening beneath the surface such as damage to the root, surrounding bone, or those permanent teeth still developing in younger children. The treatment varies enormously depending on what we find.

A knocked-out permanent tooth that’s been reimplanted typically needs splinting to the neighbouring teeth for a few weeks whilst it heals.

See the image of an avulsed tooth below:

After a few weeks of stabilisation, the splint was removed and to be monitored.

Fractured teeth might need bonding, a crown, or possibly root canal treatment if the nerve’s been affected. Our Dental Clinic in Mill Hill is equipped to handle these emergencies, and we make sure your child feels comfortable throughout the process.

That’s when having access to an Orthodontist Near Me or the Best Orthodontist Near Me becomes valuable. We can assess whether future treatment with Invisalign Braces or Invisalign Treatment might be beneficial once everything has healed.

The Road to Recovery

Emergency treatment is just the beginning. If your child plays contact sports, we’ll have a conversation about mouthguards to protect from further trauma. They’re genuinely effective at preventing these injuries in the first place. For situations where appearance has been affected or there’s a functional difficulty, we can discuss options like Invisalign or orthodontics once healing is complete and growth patterns are established.

Based on the injury, the dentist will recommend regular reviews so that your child’s tooth/teeth shall continue to develop and function well as expected. Periodic dental X-rays may also be required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Private emergency dental appointments in the UK usually cost depends on the clinic and time of day. Any additional treatment, such as extraction or filling, is charged separately.

If the tooth is severely infected and cannot be saved, a dentist can often perform an extraction during the same emergency visit. However, in some cases antibiotics or initial treatment may be needed first to control infection before removal.
